Division Descriptions

Ages 5-6

Shetland Division Director - Mike Bice at 650/960-1752 or mike.bice@sun.com
For players with no prior baseball experience and returning players who prefer to continue with a highly introductory level of play. Players learn the fundamentals of baseball. Players use a softer than usual baseball and start the season by hitting from a Batting-Tee and end the season with Coach-pitch. The diamond is 50 feet, and flexible rules expedite play. Play consists of three innings in which all team members bat and play the field each inning. No game score or standings are kept. When possible, players are assigned to teams with their schoolmates. The regular season includes games with teams from within the same division. Each player receives a baseball jersey, hat, individual and team photos, and a trophy.  See the Shetland FAQ for more information.

Age 7

For players with Shetland equivalent experience, players age 7 and above with minimal experience, and returning players who prefer to continue with a more introductory level of play. Players continue to learn the basic fundamentals of baseball. Coaches pitch with a softer-than-usual baseball. The diamond is 50 feet, the pitching mound is 38 feet, and flexible rules expedite play. Players are assigned to teams with their schoolmates. The regular season includes games with teams from within the same division. No standings are kept. Each player receives a baseball jersey, hat, individual and team photos, and a trophy.

Age 8

For returning Pinto players and new players with Pinto-1 equivalent experience who desire a level of play that is slightly more advanced than Pinto-1. Using a softer-than-usual baseball, there is a transition from coach-pitch to player-pitch as the season progresses. Field dimensions are the same as the Pinto-1 Division, and flexible rules expedite play. Players are assigned to teams with their schoolmates. The regular season includes games with teams from within the same division. No standings are kept. Each player receives a baseball jersey, hat, individual and team photos, and a trophy.

Age 9

Mustang-1 Division Director - Rod Van Syoc at 650/988-8005 or rod1285@sbcglobal.net
For first year Mustang players and returning Mustang players who prefer a division that is less competitive than Mustang-2. Begins the players' training in the complete game of baseball. Players pitch with a regulation baseball. The diamond is 60 feet and the pitching mound is 44 feet. Leadoffs are not permitted, but base stealing is introduced. To form balanced teams, players participate in "tryouts" to evaluate skill levels (batting, fielding, throwing, and running). Team coaches subsequently "draft" players based on tryout results. The regular season includes games with teams from within the same division. Each player receives the use of a full baseball uniform and receives individual and team photos.  See the Mustang-1 FAQ for more information.

Age 10

For returning Mustang players and new players with Mustang-1 equivalent experience. Players pitch with a regulation baseball. Field dimensions are the same as the Mustang-1 Division. Base stealing is permitted; leadoffs, and pitching from the stretch are introduced. Players participate in the same "tryout" process as M-1. Coaches draft teams based on tryout results. The regular season includes games with teams from within the same division. Each player receives the use of a full baseball uniform and receives individual and team photos.

Ages 11-12

Introduces the developing young players to the full game of baseball. Players pitch with a regulation baseball. The diamond is extended to 70 feet and the pitching mound is 48 feet. Leadoffs are permitted and stealing is allowed. Team coaches draft players based on tryout results. The regular season includes games with teams from within the same division. Each player receives the use of a full baseball uniform and gets individual and team photos.

Ages 13-14

Continues to introduce the maturing players to the complete game of baseball. The diamond is extended to 80 feet and the pitching mound is 54 feet (distances which are better suited to the players' developing arms). Team Coaches “draft” players based on tryout results With a 20+ game season, teams from LA-MVPB participate in an inter-locked league with teams from other South Bay PONY Baseball leagues. Each player receives the use of a full baseball uniform and receives individual and team photos.

Ages 15-16

Provides players an opportunity to play full regulation baseball. The diamond and pitching distance is the same size as high school, college and professional baseball. Players will be selected based on roster openings and tryout results (fee refunds are given to unselected players). LA-MVPB participates in an inter-locked league with teams from other leagues around the South Bay. Our practice and home field is at MVHS. A ~20 game season starts after the end of the high-school season and concludes by mid July. Each player receives the use of a full baseball uniform.

Ages 17-19

Palomino Division Director - Ken Law at 415/699-2199 or ken.law@lamvpb.org
This Division is meant to be an adjunct to a player's High School/College season. League play starts at the end of the High School playoffs (3rd week in May) and runs until July 10th with a schedule of ~22 games. Rosters are generally filled with starters from various Varsity baseball teams in the area, including many of the All-League & All-CCS players in Santa Clara County. The Home field for our Palomino program is the King's Academy Varsity baseball facility. Each player receives the use of a full baseball uniform (except pants).
