Back-to-Baseball Camps

All Players: Refresh your baseball skills, get ready for tryouts, meet friends, and have some fun! Our annual Back-To-Baseball camps are scheduled for the weekend of January 3 and 4, and are FREE to all registered players.

This years camps are again hosted by St. Francis High School and Varsity Head Coach Mike Oakland. Last year was our first year having the camp at St. Francis and it was very popular and got rave reviews!

If you just can't wait until January, check out the winter holiday clinics being offered by St. Francis, Mitty, Stanford, ASA, and SCU.

Bronco and Pony Divisions (11-14): Coach Oakland, his staff and players will be on hand to get players back into baseball frame of mind and go over techniques and drills that will help players start another successful baseball season. The Bronco and Pony camp is Saturday, January 3 at St. Francis High School. Players with last names beginning A-H please use the morning session, 9:00am to Noon, and I-Z use the afternoon session, 1:00pm to 4:00pm. If you have a conflict you cannot avoid please feel free to attend the other session.

Pinto-2 through Mustang (8-10): This camp emphasises fun, fundamentals, and getting back into shape after the long winter break. The Pinto-2 and Mustang camp is Sunday, January 4 at St. Francis High School. Players with last names beginning A-H please use the morning session, 9:00am to Noon, and I-Z use the afternoon session, 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Shetland and Pinto-1 (5-7): Camps are arranged separately with each team. Your coach will give you information about this once teams have been formed.

Tryouts — Mustang, Bronco, Pony

What if it Rains?

Camps and Tryouts WILL be conducted in a light rain. If in doubt, check the website homepage.

Tryouts are required for all players who register for Mustang, Bronco, and Pony Divisions, and the Pinto-2 Club Team. There are no Tryouts for Shetland and Pinto players (teams are assembled by the Division Director). Information about Colt Tryouts is below.

In prior years, families could reserve a time for their player's tryouts. Unfortunately, our online tryout reservation system was a feature of our online registration system, which we lost back on December 15, and there was not enough time to put a new system in place. Therefore, we are asking everyone to attend tryouts per the schedule below, based on division and last name:

Date Division Last Name Tryout Time Slot
Saturday
January 10
Mustang-2 A-J 8:30am-10:00am
Mustang-2 K-Z 10am-11:30am
Mustang-1 A-J 12:00pm-1:30pm
Mustang-1 K-Z 1:30pm-3:00pm
Sunday
January 11
Pony A-J 11:00am-12:30pm
Pony K-Z 12:30pm-2:00pm
Saturday
January 17
Bronco A-J 8:30am-10:00am
Bronco K-Z 10am-11:30am

Please Note: Tryout times for Bronco were revised on Tuesday, January 13. If your last name starts with Q through Z, you need to come earlier than was previously announced!

All tryouts will be held at Rosita Field. Please allow 1½ to 2 hours to complete tryouts.

If you cannot come during your designated time, you can come during a different time slot, but you must come on the same day, since the fields are configured differently for each division.

We ask for your patience with this emergency tryout process. We will do our best to get players through the tryout process as quickly as possible. No player will be turned away at tryouts!

The purpose of tryouts is to evaluate players skills so that we can:

  • ensure that the player is signed up for the appropriate division;
  • form balanced teams;
  • qualify players who have signed up to play on a Club Team.
Tryouts are not for the purpose of “cutting” any players, except for Club Teams and at the Colt (16U) and Palomino (19U) levels.

Tryouts consist of each player doing a short timed run, hitting 5-7 balls pitched from a pitching machine, fielding 3-4 fly balls and making a throw to second base, and fielding 3-5 ground balls at shortstop and making a throw to first base. Mustang Division tryouts also include an optional station where players throw 5-10 pitches to an adult catcher. The total tryout process takes about an hour. Please bring a hat and a glove and wear appropriate baseball attire. Unless the league informs you otherwise, you may assume that your child will play in the division that you request on your application. In some cases, based on tryout results, safety considerations, or available roster openings, the League will call you to suggest an alternate placement for your child.

Tryouts — Colt

Tryouts for the “open” LA-MV Colt Team will be held on Sunday, May 3 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Rosita Field. This tryout will define the roster for this team and is mandatory in order to qualify for this team.

All of the players will be go through a series of different running, fielding, pitching and hitting skills evaluations that will likely be followed up with a intersquad game that will conclude the tryout process at or around 2:00. Players will be evaluated on all aspects of their game as well as well the team needs and roster accommodations. Player evaluations will be made by Head Coach Eric Pini as well as selected members of the LAMV Pony Baseball Board of Directors, all with extensive experience relative to this age group of players.

Players currently playing on one of the preformed teams (Coach Neal Stephens, Coach Ben Martin, or Coach Troy Marcyes) are not required to tryout.

Please direct any questions to Colt Division Director Scott Kusich at 408/802-2606 or sakusich@rockwellcollins.com.
